How To Limit Screen Time For Kids
In today’s era, one thing that every parent might want to do is make their child avoid and limit screen time. They would want him to involve in physical activities instead where kids play outdoors, do creative stuff related to arts and crafts, or read books and indulge in mind games. It might seem but is not easy in these times of technology on emphasizing over limiting screen time for kids where mobile phones, tablets and tv’s have taken over everything. Kids plead that all their friends watch TV and tablets and they also demand such things.
It is a matter of concern because study proves that children indulged in screen time lack a white part in the brain which is involved in language learning and other emerging literacy skills. Here are four easy and simple ways on how to limit screen time for your kids:
1- Start Young:
The more the kids use the screen at an early age, the more they will be used to doing it in the future when they grow into adults. Doing it from the start will lead to minimizing using it in the future. It is true that if you start off with making your child practice anything from the scratch, he will become used to it and will continue following in the future too. When a child is young, his brain is developing and he is ready to absorb things from the surroundings.
Not all screen time is bad but anything excessive is not good and if not used in the correct manner can be of harm rather than fun. At a younger age, limit kids screen time as it is easier since you can’t just deny them without making out reasons or by just telling them they are too young for it now.
2- Set Routine:
If you don’t want to quit the screen time completely, no worries minimizing is the right way instead of not making it available completely. Firstly, select the appropriate window for them to watch and then comes the scheduling. You might allow only one hour every day and it might be one of his favorite shows. You will have to pay a very close eye over it so that they don’t exceed the time limit or watch any other inappropriate stuff.
Provide children with limited other resources to keep them occupied in something productive. Make sure they have board games, their favorite story books, arts and craft material and stuff for not getting attracted towards other stuff.
3- Set Example:
To agree or not, we must accept the fact that children follow the actions of their parents. They observe closely to your actions and tend to copy the same whether you want it or not. It might seem hard but you will have to take account of such things. If they see you reading a book, they will gravitate towards it and if they see you scrolling through your phone and watching television all the time, they will also do so. One of the most easy and the simplest ways to limit screen time is to follow on your own.
Try getting involved with your little ones. Pick up a ball or grab their favorite toy to get their interest built up towards playing. Your involvement and interest can distract them from the screen activities. Remember, he will look for such activities when alone and finds everyone else around him occupied.
4- Prepare the Environment:
The learning process relies on three things you, the child and the environment which can either be the classroom or home. Your home in this case must be set up in this way for example there should be a place where you spend all of the time with them. Kids generally like challenging and adventurous activities like climbing, hanging and things like these. You can have them engage in work such as watering the plants, helping you with the chores to strengthen your bond and have them physically active.
The better your home environment is, the more your child will be least interested in spending time over screens and more convenient it will be on limiting screen time for children. Taking such things in consideration will help lead him to take interest in outdoor activities which is good for both his mind and body.
